#NigeriaDecides2023: Why I'm not talking about the elections in Nigeria — Burna Boy

Following a call from Nigerians who accused him of political apathy, Grammy winner Burna Boy explained his position.

Last weekend, as the Presidential and Federal Assembly elections were being held, a Twitter user, @DukeDarls, sparked conversation by accusing Burna Boy and other artists of making money with freedom fight songs motivating Nigeria to vote.

He wrote: "Burna Boy, Wizkid, Olamide and Davido, I never want to hear any more patriotic songs from you against freedom after the election. Especially you Burna, you built a house on the hill freedom fighter music; y'all should shut up forever and sing the normal Nyansh & Women song."

The singer, however, explained the reason for his silence. Relying on his Instagram Stories, Burna Boy said his decision to stay away stemmed from the fact that he didn't have a favorite candidate in the election.

"I don't know why it's so important to some Nigerians that I didn't talk about the elections," he said.

The "Last Last" singer further explained that he doesn't have a candidate he believes in. As a result, he said, he has never supported any political party or candidate because he doesn't want people to vote, and they blame him when the candidate doesn't deliver.

“That being said, I hope all the votes count and the best wins,” he added.

Unlike Burna Boy, his colleague, Falz the Bad Guy, was at the polling station to exercise his right to vote.

According to reports, Falz was attacked by political thugs at his polling station in Lagos.

A social media post by a user called Bello claimed the singer was attacked and his phone was stolen.

This is not the first time that Burna Boy will be accused of showing apathy towards the plight of Nigerians.

During the 2020 #EndSARS protests, the singer was accused of not lending his voice to the cause.

However, a few days later, the musician announced that he had established a relief fund, ProjectProtectng, for victims of police brutality across the country.

He also announced that American hip-hop star P Diddy made the first donation to the relief fund.

Additionally, Burna Boy also shared photos of #EndSARS billboards across Nigeria, which he funded.
