NNL Super 4: Bendel and El Kanemi off to a good start

El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri and Bendel Insurance of Benin set the tone during the Nigeria National League Super 4 Qualifiers, held at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, as both clubs won their opening matches on the second day of the tournament.

El Kanemi recorded the first victory of the tournament beating Gombe's Doma United 2-0 in their matchday two game on Thursday to take an early lead in the round-robin tournament.

The match was El Kanemi's first glimpse of action in the Super 4, after their opening day game against Bendel Insurance was postponed to allow the Maiduguri side to rest, after their late arrival for the tournament.

In the second game decided on Thursday, a late strike from Austin Ogunye was the difference as Bendel Insurance lost 1-0 to Bayelsa United at the same venue.

The striker stole the ball in style into the bottom corner of the post with his left foot, after his first right-footed attempt was denied by the Bayelsa United keeper.

The result took the NNL title out of reach for Bayelsa United, leaving them with one point from two games. Their first match against Doma United on Wednesday ended scoreless.

With one win each, El Kanemi Warriors and Bendel Insurance have three points each and are separated by goal difference on the table, while Bayelsa United and Doma United have one point each.

El Kanemi Warriors and Bendel Insurance will now face off in a possible title-clinching match on Friday. The match was scheduled for the first day but had to be rescheduled for the rest day, due to the imbalance created by travel.

The final day of the Super 4 is Saturday, with El Kanemi Warriors concluding their campaign against Bayelsa United, while Bendel Insurance take on Doma United.

The season-ending NNL Super 4 playoffs have adopted a round-robin format, as the club with the most points after three rounds of matches will be crowned the second-tier league champion.
