NNPC Fuel Subsidy: Representatives Summon Auditor General Over Payment Documents

The House of Representatives has summoned the Auditor General of the Federation (AGF) to appear before it on August 30 for an explanation of fuel subsidy payments between 2013 and 2022.

Legislators want the Auditor General to provide documentary evidence of the audit carried out on the sums spent on the fuel subsidy by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Ltd.

Rep. Ibrahim Aliyu, the chairman of the special committee investigating the fuel subsidy, issued the notice Thursday in Abuja.

Aliyu made this known while reviewing the documents submitted by the representative of the Accountant General of the Federation (AGoF), Mr. Okolieaboh Sylvia.

AGoF was represented by the Account Manager of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Saleh.

Legislators also asked the AGoF office to provide relevant financial transactions on the fuel subsidy for the reporting period.

In its attempt to ensure a fair hearing as enshrined in law, the committee said it expected AGoF to appear before it on September 8 with the relevant documents.

The committee instructed AGoF on the need to have an independent oversight mechanism to verify the veracity of transactions.

The committee also expressed the need for the AGoF office to perform due diligence in verifying transaction documents submitted by all government agencies in accordance with its duties as set out in the law.
