NNPP leader tasks Tinubu with finding political solution to subsidy crisis

The South West leader of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), Bisi Olopoeyan, yesterday urged President Bola Tinubu to implement a political solution to the outcry over the removal of fuel subsidies before it escalates .

Olopoeyan, in a conversation with The Guardian, said the pains and agony triggered by the removal of subsidies were becoming unbearable and could land Nigerians in dire straits if not addressed in time.

He said, "If the president cannot reinstate the executive order subsidy with which he removed it on his inaugural broadcast, then he should apply political wisdom, otherwise the suffering of the country is too great.

“President Tinubu may have to think outside the box to look for a way to alleviate the suffering that Nigerians are currently going through. The cost of living is indescribable now.

"The president may need to engage other stakeholders outside of his party and an assemblage of experts to solve the problem. I don't see the stopgap proposal solving the problem. I don't see either more governors help.

"If it is not possible for him to turn back, then he must seek a serious and well-thought-out political solution." Olopoeyan, however, said no pain or hardship in this country could bring the military back to power.

“It is impossible at the moment. No army can overthrow power in the country again, but the experience of the #EndSARS protests should be on our minds. We cannot push our people against the wall and we expect him not to react," he noted. He said the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) and the Trades Union Congress (TUC) have the right to engage in a industrial action, but noted that there must be no violence.

During the scheduled Oyo State Council election scheduled for April 2024, the NNPP stalwart rejected the insinuation that he was incentivized with money by Governor Seyi Makinde to train the NNPP in the race to give credibility to the exercise.

“I believe that the NNPP can gain advice if it participates in the process and that is why we joined. The Governor and I have never discussed anything. I also believe in the ability to the Oyo State Independent Election Commission (OSIEC) to organize free, fair and credible elections,” he said.
