'Not good enough' - Lampard slams Chelsea after Brighton loss

Frank Lampard was 'disappointed on every level' after Chelsea's 2-1 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Blues suffered their third consecutive defeat under caretaker boss Lampard after the top-flight Seagulls came from behind to take the spoils at Stamford Bridge.

Danny Welbeck canceled out Conor Gallagher's deflected effort, before Julio Enciso's 30-yard thunderbolt moved Brighton within four points of fifth-placed Tottenham.

The hosts, who remain 11th, were by far the second best as they registered just eight shots to their opponents' 26, and Lampard was quick to criticize his players.

"I'm disappointed on every level," he said. “The best team won. They could have won more. They played as a team. They have been together for a long time.

"[We were] not good enough. All the basic parts of football – fighting, running – were missing. [It's] not about commitment as such.

"Some players couldn't physically play on Wednesday, Saturday, Tuesday. Some of these changes were forced and some were opportunities. In a modern team you have to be ready to come in.

"As a team, we were short today. Where can we improve quickly? For me, these are the basics of football."

These are due to come to fruition on Tuesday, when Chelsea host Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Blues need to overturn a 2-0 deficit against the defending champions if they are to qualify for the semi-finals, and Lampard has urged his players to produce a response for the supporters.

"It's no use being too depressed, but we have to understand why today went like this," he continued.

"In football, a story can change very quickly. Real Madrid in the Champions League is the pinnacle of football. There are things I will tell the players and keep to myself.

"Chelsea fans will come on Tuesday to see a team give it their all to turn things around, and that's what we need to do."
