NUJ appeals to Delta government to help flood victims

Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists ((NUJ), Warri Correspondents Chapel, Delta State, have appealed to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to quickly come to the aid of flood victims in the state.

The chapel made the call following its monthly convention which was held at its secretariat in Gbiaye Street, Warri, Warri South Local Government Area of the state on Thursday.

Reporters have called on the state government to provide emergency relief to flood victims in and around Warri metropolis.

The flooding was orchestrated after a near-relentless heavy downpour that ravaged several communities across the state earlier in the week.

In a similar vein, media professionals have advised residents of flood-prone areas to heed previous warnings from various relevant federal government agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and Nigeria. Meteorological Agency (NiMET) on the need to evacuate floodplains.

In the communiqué issued at the end of the convention and signed by Okies Veeky and Dele Fasan, president and secretary of the chapel, the chapel urged the state government to intervene immediately by coming to the aid of the victims of the floods, by evacuating them to a safer place and providing relief materials.

While reiterating the urgency of the need for the government to intervene, the chapel noted with concern the losses that would have been suffered by many residents whose homes and business premises were submerged by the floods at the following three consecutive days of heavy showers.< /p>

The Journalists' Union, however, has urged residents across the state to clean their sewers and refrain from emptying trash into sewers to avoid blockages.

The union also renewed its call on the state government to prioritize the rehabilitation of all failing roads and drainages in and around Warri Metropolis.

He noted that the gesture would help alleviate the challenges posed by flooding in affected communities in the delta.

The chapel has tasked the leadership of Warri, Uvwie and Environs Special Area Development Agency (WUEDA) to take responsibility for positively impacting the mandated communities.

It was also decided at the convention that members should now resume coverage of state government activities as a platform for the government to seek public input and vice versa.
