NYSC denies rape of body members in Akwa Ibom robbery attack

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Thursday confirmed a robbery attack on its Akwa-Ibom state lodge, but denied reports of corps members being raped by the gunmen.< /p>

He was reacting to reports that gunmen attacked, raped and robbed corps members of their valuables.

In a statement, Akwa Ibom State Coordinator Ms. Ekwe Chinyere said a visit had been made to the affected corps members for on-site assessment.

She said her interaction with said corps members revealed that 21 corps members occupying said property were attacked by robbers around 1am.

“In the process, the invaders took their valuables, including phones, laptops and cash. of the body had been violated,” the statement read in part.

She also said "the State Commissioner of Police assured members of the corps and members of the public that an investigation into the matter had been opened and the culprits would soon be apprehended.

"Meanwhile, the Commissar has an equally detailed watch around the area with the promise to extend the same to other corps lodges.

"As a result, the State Coordinator reaffirmed that there was no incident of rape. She therefore urged members of the State Corps to perform their lawful duties and to use the safety telephone lines already provided, in distress situations."
