Obi promises to restore Ibadan to lost glory

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has lamented the downgrading of Ibadan city status.

According to a statement issued by his campaign council on Sunday, Obi spoke during a courtesy visit to Ibadan's Olubadan, Oba Olalekan Balogun, on Saturday.

He would have lamented that "the University of Ibadan known for its quality teaching has become a shadow of itself".

Obi during the visit, however, promised to restore the educational status of Ibadan institutions if elected president in 2023.

The statement reads in part as follows: "In the past, according to Obi, people came from all over the country and from outside Nigeria to seek quality university education in the famous citadel of learning, the University of Ibadan. Today, the university, sadly, is but a shadow of its former self.

"He also commented on UCH's very high reputation as a medical center of excellence attended by all African nationals.

"Obi promised that as Nigerian President, he would restore the educational status of these institutions and thereby restore the city of Ibadan to its lost glory."

In his response, the Olubadan reportedly advised Obi to stay focused and committed to his programs.

A member of the traditional council of Olubadan, the Balogun of Ibadan, Tajudeen Ajibola, who spoke on behalf of the monarch, said: "How our people would live safely and how to guarantee that the 2023 general elections be held without any form of violence, these are Olubadan's concerns.”
