Obong from Calabar raises alarm over impending outbreak in Calabar

The Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, is very concerned that there is an impending epidemic in Calabar due to the resurgence of growing litter in some parts of the city.

He expressed his displeasure with the continued accumulation of litter on the streets of Calabar, the state capital.

He therefore called on the Cross River State government to quickly remove the waste.

The Obong, in a statement signed by the President of the Obong of Calabar Executive Forum (OCEF), Chief Gershom Henshaw, and Secretary, Dr. Maurice Ekpeyong, described the protracted evacuation crisis of rubbish in Calabar as completely unacceptable, especially for a city known worldwide as one of the cleanest in the country and a privileged tourist destination.

He claimed that the increase in litter poses a health hazard to the public and is likely to lead to a drastic reduction in tourist visitation.

He called on the relevant government agencies to urgently carry out the immediate disposal of the garbage.

"Heaps of garbage in some areas have blocked traffic as well as residents' entrances to their homes, with a foul odor polluting the environment, exposing the public to untold hardship and disease.

>

“OCEF has called for regular, prompt and sufficient funding of the waste management agency and other relevant government agencies charged with responsibility for waste management in the state to reverse this ugly trend which has persisted for some time now."

The statement called on the public to cooperate with the government in keeping the environment always clean, especially as the Christmas season is fast approaching with the expected influx of visitors to the state.

He added that environmental sanitation should be a priority at all times for the well-being of the people.
