Ortom seeks polling stations in Benue IDP camp

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to make adequate provision for the more than two million displaced people in the state ahead of the 2023 general election.

>

He made the call during a panel discussion titled “Contemporary Security Challenges and their Effects on the 2023 General Elections,” hosted by the Platinum Post newspaper on Tuesday in Abuja.

The governor, represented by Professor Magdalene Dura, his special adviser on the Millennium Development Goals, said INEC should set up polling stations in IDP camps and also engage its members as as ad hoc staff during elections.

This, he said, would ensure the credibility of the elections in these centers while giving them a sense of belonging.

“It is necessary for the government and INEC to guarantee the credibility of the electoral process,” he said.

He also expressed concern over the plight of more than two million displaced people in his state who he said were left homeless as a result of the insurgency.

He called on the federal government to come to the aid of the displaced people in Benue as it is doing for other displaced people in other parts of the country.

“There is a lack of fairness and justice in Nigeria. INEC needs to have comprehensive data on IDPs so that they can set up polling stations for IDPs,” he said .

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, who chaired the event, stressed the need to ensure the safety and security of voters, election staff, materials, candidates, party agents , observers and media professionals during the electoral process.

Represented by his chief of staff, Usman Mohammed, Ganduje called on the electorate to avoid acts of violence and other negative tendencies that could mar the conduct of the 2023 general elections.
