Ogun government, MP and elected legislators receive certificate of return

The Ogun National Independent Electoral Commission on Thursday presented certificates of return to Governor Dapo Abiodun and his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, who emerged victorious in the gubernatorial elections held on March 18.

In addition, 25 newly elected members of the House of Assembly collected their return certificates at the event held at the media center of INEC headquarters in Abeokuta.

INEC National Commissioner for Ogun, Osun and Ondo States, Prof. Adekunle Ajayi, presented the return certificates to Abiodun and his Deputy.

Abiodun garnered 276,298 votes to defeat his closest rival and PDP candidate, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, who obtained 262,383 votes.

Ogun Resident Electoral Commissioner, Niyi Ijalaye, also presented certificates of return to 25 elected members of the House of Assembly remaining that of Ifo 1 Constituted State, which is pending due to the resumption of elections scheduled in one of the voting units scheduled for April.

The resident electoral commissioner, in Ogun, Niyi Ijalaye, explained that the event was constitutional and supported by electoral law.

Ijalaye said: "The election is over and the winners are here and the law requires us to present each of them with return certificates."

Speaking during the presentation, Ajayi praised the peaceful conduct of the polls in the state.

He said the use of new technologies such as BVAS and IRev for the first time has enhanced the credibility of the electoral process.

He said, however, that the commission had taken note of the invaluable lessons of the elections which he believed would certainly be useful in improving the following elections.

Ajayi explained that the presentation of the certificates was statutory in accordance with Article 72 of the Constitution which obliges INEC to issue return certificates within 14 days to the winners of the elections it conducted.

He instructed the governor and other returnee certificate recipients to remain committed to serving humanity in their respective roles.

"INEC as an electoral arbiter under President Mahmood Yakub will remain consistent in achieving our vision and aspiration to be one of the best election management bodies in the world.

“The commission aims to fulfill our core mandate of independence, impartiality and transparency,” he said.

Abiodun, in his remarks, said his victory was an opportunity to continue bringing the dividends of democracy to the nooks and crannies of the state.

The Governor also commended the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired), for being so deliberate and determined to create an environment conducive to the holding of free and fair elections.

He explained that the election was free, fair and transparent. People came by the thousands to exercise their right to vote. This election proclaims a renewed dedication to the vision of this administration. This is a call for new hope for Ogun and the entire Nigerian nation,” he said.

Abiodun explained that his government will continue to deliver people-centred programs, urging people to join the government in building the future of the state together
