Okowa charges DELSU to improve research, as 4,855 college graduates

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has urged Delta University (DELSU), Abraka to push its frontiers of research, teaching and learning to respond to current global realities.

Okowa gave the advice on Saturday at the 15th graduation ceremony of Abraka University in Ethiopia's Eastern State Local Government Area.

The convocation ceremony was for the graduates of the 2021/2022 academic session of the university.

The Governor, who was represented by his Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, said his administration would continue to provide necessary assistance to the institution.

Okowa noted that the global marketplace was becoming too competitive and urged management to revise its curriculum to reflect current realities with an emphasis on entrepreneurial education.

"We understand the importance of education not only in the life of the individual but also in nation-building. Education is undoubtedly capital-intensive, but remains the foundation of progress and sustainable development in every society.

"That is why, despite the competitive demand from each sector, we have simultaneously established three more universities, thus having four operating universities in the state.

"Studies conducted in 2018 found that of 22,840 Delta natives qualified for college admission, only 4,000 were able to gain admission.

"Today, universities are functioning and bringing education closer to people," he said.

Okowa praised the efforts of the DELSU Board of Trustees for bringing the university to the level of growth it has achieved.

He also congratulated the graduates for their academic achievements.

The governor assured that the state government will continue to remain committed to the regular payment of staff salaries, the release of grants and the provision of infrastructure within available resources.

Earlier, DELSU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Andy Egwunyenga said the total number of graduates was 4855 in the 2021/2022 academic session.

He added that it includes university certificates, diplomas and degrees.

Egwunyenga said the university has always lived up to its mandate of quality graduates who will contribute to nation building and advance the cause of humanity in the world.

"The quality and quantity of graduates produced by our university over the years is testament to our ability to live up to the vision of our founding fathers

"I congratulate all of us, staff and students, for the successes we have had in bringing together the ideas on which our university is founded," he said.

The Vice-Chancellor has identified understaffing and infrastructure deficit, among others, as major challenges at the university

While thanking the state government for its magnanimous funding of the institution, Egwunyenga called for improved funding to enable some of its challenges to be addressed.

"The University urgently needs more accommodation for students and staff.

“The relocation of the Faculties of Agriculture and Management Sciences to Abraka necessitated the construction of a new residence for students and apartment blocks for staff,” he said.

He highlighted some of the recent achievements of the University including: construction of the Faculty of Management Science complex, purchase of 1000 KVA and its accessories.

Renovation of the Institute of Education, critical repair of the NDDC hostel, renovation of the convocation hall, renovation of the postgraduate hostel, reticulation of the new project electrically and among others.

Egwunyenga called on philanthropists, stakeholders and alumni of the Institution to support the efforts of the state government to fund the University.

He congratulated the graduates and urged them to be worthy ambassadors of the Institution and to be the vanguard of the New World Order.

In his remarks, Professor Sam Oyovbaire, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of DELSU, urged the state government to commit more resources to the university.

He said the funding should cover aspects of research, scholarship, technology, seminars, library and information science, and regular intellectual workshops.

"The University is a unique academic institution with a special mandate.

"I have urged all of our stakeholders to engage in the above areas of the University through funding to enable academic renaissance and sustain innovative ideas for which the University is known", said Oyovbaire.
