Actress Maxine Peake has described plans to close a historic theater as "an attack in some ways on our art".
Oldham Coliseum is set to close next month after losing all of its Arts Council England funding.
The star, who was among activists who attended a public meeting to protest the plans, said places like the Colosseum should remain open as they were "a sanctuary for many people".
Oldham Council previously said the theater was not fit for purpose and unveiled plans for a new £24million venue.
