Ondo government to hold teachers accountable for declining school enrollment - Official

The Ondo State Government is concerned about the continued decline in the number of students enrolled in public schools in Ondo State.

Indications were that parents preferred private schools over public schools due to the perceived poor condition and fallen state of public schools in the state.

Chairman of the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Victor Olabimtan, voiced his concerns on Friday during an interactive session with headteachers across the state .

He complained that the public school population had been declining despite government efforts and blamed teachers for the situation.

“Teachers will now be held accountable for any drop in enrollment in primary schools,” Olabintan said.

The SUBEB boss denounced the attitude of some teachers who take their children to private schools, saying that this would no longer be allowed.

Mr. Olabimtan said the Ondo state government will not let up in its efforts to improve school standards as well as its staff.

Mr. Olabimtan called on the education secretaries of the 18 local government areas not to hesitate to report any teacher deemed insufficient in their duty position for possible sanctions.

He therefore instructed the teachers to do what is necessary in the field of the registration campaign and to avoid any act of indolence.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State government has approved that practicing primary school teachers can now achieve Tier 16 status like their civil service counterparts.

This implicitly means that they can be considered for the position of permanent secretary when such a position is open.

Mr. Olabimtan, who dropped the hint, also distributed promotion letters to 2,111 teachers, 85 of whom are level 16.

He reaffirmed the true intention of the government to create an atmosphere conducive to education.

Mr. Olabimtan thanked the governor for providing matching funding to UBEC which had hitherto been neglected for about five years, paving the way for massive school reconstruction, renovations as well as the provision of furniture items.

PTA State Chairman Abimbola Omo-Oloja in his response praised Governor Akeredolu for his interest in removing education from the foundation.

He pledged the unwavering support of parents for the government's efforts.

Mr. Omo-Oloja has called for the return of extracurricular activities in schools.
