'One more tournament sounds good' - Neville backs Southgate to stay with England until Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate set to stay on as England manager for Euro 2024 despite being knocked out in World Cup quarter-finals, says Gary Neville.

In charge of the Three Lions since 2016, Southgate has already established himself as the best boss to take charge since 1966 World Cup winner Alf Ramsey, reaching the semi-finals of Russia 2018 and the final of the FIFA World Cup. Euro 2020.

A round of 16 loss to France at Qatar 2022 left Southgate pondering his future, after telling the Football Association he would like time to consider his next steps.

Neville, however, believes he should stay on for England's next major tournament campaign and has suggested he could spend a year and a half on an interim basis to help find a successor to follow in his footsteps.

"There will be those who listen, who say, 'You have to have someone who gets us across the line, you have to have someone who has a winning mentality, you have to change the manager,'" a- he told Sky Sports.

"I get it, it sounds beautiful and wonderful, but I remember we got rid of Bobby Robson in 1990. I remember we got rid of Terry Venables in 1996.

"It didn't go particularly well right after those tournaments and I think Gareth is doing a really good job and one more tournament sounds good to me.

"I hope this team can stay together and evolve. I think it has evolved in this tournament. We have been more progressive, more positive in the matches, and we are starting again.

"He's seen it all, and I think he should stay in the system to shape the future. He's been there for 10 years. I would like him to stay with the FA beyond his role as a 'coach.'

Southgate is under contract until Euro 2024 and is fifth among England managers in overall win rate, with 60.5%.
