Ortom apologizes for 'anti-Peul' comment

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has apologized to all 'those who feel offended' for his statement that 'to hell with Atiku Abubakar and those who support the Fulani man to become the next president".

Ortom had remarked on Sunday when he greeted the G5 governors in Makurdi, the capital of Benue, that "To hell with Atiku and all those who support him. They should go tell him. You want me to be the slave of a Fulani. It is better that I die. Anyone who supports Atiku is an enemy of Benue.

"My people are being killed and you want me to shut up.

“My term ends in May and you can do whatever you want if you think you have the powers. I wrote my will. When I gave it to my wife, she cried all night If I die at 62 many of my mates are long gone If I die today I am a fulfilled person but let it be noted that I died resisting the invasion and killing of my people.

"I will never support a Fulani to become president. If there is another person who is willing to work with me and keep my people safe, I will work with him," Ortom said .

But when asked if he still maintained his position as before, Ortom replied, "That was not what I meant when I was captured saying that, but still, I know it would be a logical fallacy if people took it seriously like I did. But I want to say to those I offended by my words that I don't mean that, I I'm sorry," he said.

He was in Bauchi alongside the People's Democratic Party (PDP) G5 Governors in a closed meeting with their Bauchi State counterpart, Bala Mohammed.

Governors present were Nyesom Wike from Rivers, Samuel Ortom from Benue, Okezie Ikpeazu from Abia and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi from Enugu State while Seyi Makinde from Oyo State was in the United States.
