Osogbo residents protest plans to impeach monarch

Village chiefs and natives of Osogbo staged a peaceful protest on Thursday, demanding the state government not to depose Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji.

The protest took off from the residence of the chief Osogbo village chiefs, Chief Jimoh Buraimo, and moved to Odi-Olowo before moving in a long convoy of vehicles to the Government Secretariat of Osogbo. 'Abere, Osun State.

Armed with placards with inscriptions such as; 'Don't cause confusion and violence in Osogbo', 'Stop the attempted impeachment of Oba Jimoh Abidemi Olanipekun' among others protesters said the state government is after the royal father for reasons not disclosed.

Speaking to reporters, Chief Buraimo, accused of clandestine moves by the government to depose Oba Olanipekun without any justification.

He said, "The Osun State government's attempt to take this ungodly approach comes against the background of the existing case brought by the Oluwin Ajibilu/Oyekomi family members of the 'Oyekomi, Osogbo in Suit No: HOS/115/ 2022: PRINCE SAKARIYAU ALABI ADEBIYI & 2 ORS VS HRM OBA JIMOH OLANIPEKUN (ATAOJA OF OSOGBO) The 3rd, 4th & 5th Defendants represent the State Government of Osun and the case is still pending in the Osogbo High Court.

"The current attempt by the state government is capable of disrupting the existing peace in Osogbo and Osun State in general. It is also an attempt to usurp power and office of the Judiciary to adjudicate the case currently pending in court and it is highly prejudicial and dismissive of the process of the Honorable Osun State Court.

“It should be noted that we cannot accept this illegal attempt which will portray the government of Osun State as highly insensitive and blind to the aspirations and aspirations of the people of Osun State. of Ataoja of Osogbo land is the custodian of our traditional heritage. But in reaction to the government's alleged plans to impeach Ataoja, the governor's chief press secretary, Ismail Omipidan, warned against trafficking lies that could incite the people against the state governor , Adegboyega Oyetola.

Omipidan, in a statement, referred to a letter written by Asipa of Osogbo, Chief Ajadi Badmus, in which the community leader urged the governor to halt action on plans to depose Ataoja.

He described allegations that the governor was planning to overthrow Ataoja as an attempt to turn the people against the governor and his government by agents of the People's Democratic Party.

The statement further reads in several parts: "The author of the letter, Chief Ajadi Badmus, has unrestricted access to Mr. Governor. If indeed he has the best intentions, he should have inquire with the governor before making his false statements." Recall that Chief Badmus also wrote a similar letter shortly before the governor's election on July 16 in which he claimed that the government had moved the airbase from Osogbo to Iragbiji . The wicked lie has become the main weapon that PDP agents have deployed to solicit votes in and around Osogbo. “Usually, Ataoja is directly under the supervision of the local government of Osogbo. Therefore, the governor has nothing to do with his office. Moreover, the governor has no problem with Ataoja. He, however, urged people to disregard the rumor that it didn't fit Oyetola's gentlemanly personality.
