Oyo government warns communities against drinking water from contaminated streams

The Oyo State Government has warned residents of Ijaye, Ido, Olowo-Igbo, Iseyin and Ibarapa against drinking water from streams contaminated in their communities.

Environment and Natural Resources Commissioner Mr Abiodun Oni, who sounded the alert in Ibadan on Wednesday, said a truck carrying chemicals emptied its contents into a drain which was eventually washed away in the streams crossing the five communities.

Oni said the truck was involved in an accident on the Iroko-Oyo highway while transporting substances believed to be soap-making chemicals.

Oni revealed that soap-making chemicals that fell into the drainage ended up contaminating the streams running through the five communities, impairing the quality of the water and making it toxic to humans and the environment in general .

The statement further revealed that farmers who have planted their cash crops in the affected areas as well as fishermen should suspend all activity in the surrounding area until the waters have been tested and deemed safe for drinking .

The statement further adds that the government is aware of the situation as the ministry has sent some of its staff to the affected areas to continue monitoring the situation while carrying out water sampling until that the water can be verified as safe for consumption. .

“The state government will continue to ensure that the ecosystem is protected in the state,” he added.

Therefore, the statement instructs citizens to also take responsibility for handling and disposing of chemicals and other biodegradable items properly and ensuring that they do not end up in streams.

"Furthermore, they should abandon the bad culture of dumping waste into drains, as they eventually end up in streams and rivers and eventually work their way up the food chain process, which poses a threat to all humans," the statement concluded. .
