Oyo PDP leaders unite to galvanize support for Atiku and Makinde at Ibadan 'freedom rally'

Some prominent leaders, key players and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo on Wednesday converged on Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, for a massive 'freedom rally' to the party's presidential candidate in next month's general election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Party leaders, PDP members in the state, various groups, candidate supporters including many admirers gathered at the Total Garden Roundabout as early as 8:15 a.m. for a road march to galvanize further support for Atiku, Governor of Oyo State, Engineer 'Seyi Makinde and other standard bearers on the platform of the main opposition party.

The development, which drew huge crowds including shopkeepers, artisans, caused traffic jams as they moved from the Total Garden roundabout on a single lane of the dual carriageway towards the Agodi gate, the bus stop to Oje market, Isale Afa and Labiran before docking at the front of the old Mapo hall around 12:15 p.m.

Although the rally was peaceful as the security agencies namely the Department of State Security (DSS), the Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) were on the ground to provide security as the trains moved along the designated routes, the rally also attracted a few traders and passers-by, joining the PDP leaders and their supporters at Mapo Hall.

With this development, the apparent cold war between Makinde and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar appears to be collapsing as one of Governor Alhaji Taye Adebisi's political appointees, popularly known as Taye Currency led the entertainment for the crowd that took part in the road trip.

Taye Currency, a popular musical crooner from Fuji, is the special assistant to the governor of Oyo State for entertainment. He was spotted in a moving truck, handing out dance lyrics to the admiration of auto parts vendors at the bus stop area, traders at Oje Market, shopkeepers and residents along the roads .

The crowd, consisting of supporters of state governors and other notable PDP candidates, in Oyo, namely Bisi Ilaka (Central Senatorial District of Oyo), Joseph Tegbe (Southern Senatorial District of Oyo) swarmed is enthused as PDP stalwart, Mr. Gbenga Babalola, chanted a solidarity song in support of Atiku, Makinde, Ilaka, Tegbe, Wole Kanle and other party candidates.

Speaking at Mapo Hall, the former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Chief Jumoke Akinjide said, “Emilokan is a selfish concept that should be rejected by all Nigerians.

I would like to thank everyone who came today for the PDP and our presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

"He (Atiku) is a unifier, an economic guru and a lover of every Nigerian. He is a man of his word and he assured that his government when he takes office will allow the creation of a state police force, would give women 35% of appointments in his cabinet and young people 30% of appointments in his government. He also said he would give young people money to trade.

“Atiku said that he would provide vocational and craft training to our people and that we would have quality education, adequate power and an efficient health sector if he won the elections. We will also restore our position as the premier country on the African continent. We are meant to be the leader of the black race in the world and that can only be achieved through the Atiku/Okowa presidency. We must realize our full potential as a nation.

“APC is a failure and don't let them fool you. People who say 'Emilokan' are selfish. It's a selfish concept. It's not 'Awalokan', they said 'Emilokan'. It's our people's turn and it's the PDP's turn to take power. Go tell all our people that they should vote massively for the PDP and I can assure you that you will never regret it.

“We come here tomorrow to support our Governor, 'Seyi Makinde, who will launch his campaign for re-election. We are one big family in the PDP,” Akinjide concluded.
