Ben Duckett scored his first Test in six years with his first hundred, making 107 as the openers shared 233 for the first wicket.

When they fell Ollie Pope took over with 108, adding 176 with Harry Brook stealing the show beating England's third fastest cent from all time.

Brook made his first Test ton from 80 balls and took England to 506-4, the most points scored by a team on the first day of 'a test, even though only 75 overs were possible due to the fading light.

All this after that the match was given the go-ahead to start just two and a half hours before the scheduled start following an illness that ravaged the England side on Wednesday.

Since the XI which was named on Tuesday, only wicketkeeper Ben Foakes has been deemed unfit to play, leaving Pope to take over behind the stumps and allowing Will Jacks to enter on his Test debut alongside fellow spin bowler Liam Livingstone.

England lights up a historic day

Angle earth halted their Pakistan tour after gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan team in 2009. After nearly two decades away, it was a spectacular comeback.

If there was any doubt England could replicate the swashbuckling style that brought them so much summer success at the home in away conditions, they were banished with a dazzling blow game.

Whatever be the label given to this method - England do not like the term
