PDP and APC clash as Biden hails Buhari

Reactions continued after President Joe Biden congratulated President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired) on deepening democracy in Nigeria.

The US president had during a meeting with the Nigerian president and his counterparts from Sierra Leone, Gabon, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia, Buhari singled out for his praise not only for his upholding of democracy in Nigeria, but across the African continent.

Biden "praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his efforts to deepen democracy not only in Nigeria but also in Africa," a statement signed Thursday by the President's Senior Special Assistant for Media and advertisement, Garba Shehu , read.

Reacting to the development, Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council spokesman Charles Aniagwu said the commendation is an indication that Nigeria is on the right track.

“The DPP launched the process of deepening democracy by proposing electoral reforms. Fortunately, the President continued this process. Don't forget that he also promised not to interfere with the 2023 elections, saying he would like to leave a legacy of free and credible elections in Nigeria.

"We are happy that for the first time the international community sees something good in Nigeria, but the PDP gave birth to this process," he said.

African Action Alliance presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, however, said Biden was just a diplomat to his guests.

"This is called diplomacy, the type of language or jargon used by diplomats, considered overly complicated, cautious or vague," he said, adding that "State Department annual reports have consistently cited (Major General) Buhari as a human rights violator."

Similar to the view, National Secretary of the Young Progressive Party, Vidiyeno Bamaiyi, said that democracy began to gradually die when the current president took power.

Also speaking, National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Victor Oye, said the US President is free to express himself however he wishes.

Reacting, however, spokesman for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, said the opposition always tried to get attention even when it was not needed.

Keyamo said: "What we know is that Biden congratulated Buhari, not the PDP. We take Biden's statement literally from today. The PDP is just trying to misrepresent what the US president said and that's what we stand by.

"We all know that the worst election in Nigerian history was conducted under the PDP. Jonathan did nothing out of the ordinary. He was defeated and left power. So , what legacy are they talking about?"
