'People underestimate me': Stacey Solomon on snobbery, The X Factor and her plan to sort out Britain

Stacey Solomon shows me around Pickle Cottage. Packets of crisps, hanging from a rail in the candy cabinet, stand at attention like soldiers on parade. Shelves for dogs hold wooden boxes labeled food, grooming, clothing, walkies and bedding. We pass a procession of sparkling children's sneakers and climb the stairs. Headbands are sorted by color, of course, in jars.

And finally Solomon's favorite things: his wardrobes. "I have my beiges here, my pinks in this one and then this one for greens and blues," says the author, TV presenter and former X Factor finalist. "When I wake up, I normally think: As for her husband, actor and presenter Joe Swash, his clothes are tightly packed in a small wardrobe. "That's all he has, God loves him." Her voice rises happily and she bursts out laughing. As she often does.

Was she always tidy? “No, but I've always been organized. I think it comes from being a mom at a very young age. There was no room for error. I couldn't be late. I couldn't miss class, otherwise I would fail my exams. I couldn't miss the post race, otherwise I wouldn't have my Giro. I couldn't not cash in my milk tokens. There were so many things I had to do to get out of it.

Solomon's new book is called Tap to Tidy at Pickle Cottage. But she underestimates herself. It's not so much about tidying up as creating. She and Swash bought the part-Tudor cottage near Brentwood in Essex last year. It required a huge amount of work and Solomon did a lot of it herself. The book is a great DIY and home decorating guide for the DIY and home decor illiterate (i.e. me). I have such a dislike for both that I couldn't put up with the thought of opening Tap to Tidy. But it's actually fun, convenient, and user-friendly - much like Salomon itself.
