PEPC Judgment – ​​Peter Obi heads to the Supreme Court

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labor Party (LP), has rejected the judgment delivered on Wednesday by the Presidential Elections Petitions Tribunal (PEPC) validating the victory of President Bola Tinubu as winner of the February 25 elections.

Mr. Obi spoke on Thursday during a press conference at his residence in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The five-member PEPC panel, led by Haruna Tsammani, unanimously rejected the petition filed by the LP candidate challenging the victory of Mr Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the presidential election.

The court also dismissed the petitions of PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

Mr. Obi acknowledged that although the PEPC respected the legal deadlines, it totally disagreed with the justification of the judgment and its final conclusion.

"I express my respect for the opinions and decisions of the Court, but I openly disagree with the justification and final conclusions of the judgment," he said.

Mr. Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, announced his intention, as a presidential candidate and on behalf of the Labor Party, to immediately challenge the judgment through an appeal process.

According to him, the PEPC is not the ultimate authority in the matter, stressing that responsibility now lies with the Supreme Court, in which he expressed his confidence.

Mr. Obi urged Nigerians to maintain focus, determination and commitment to peaceful processes while stressing the importance of adhering to the rule of law.

He made it clear that the matter had not yet reached its logical conclusion.

The LP candidate suggested that his legal team had already received firm instructions to appeal the PEPC decision.

He expressed unwavering determination in his quest for justice, not only for himself but also for the multitude of supporters across the country whose electoral mandate, he said, was unjustly thwarted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).

Mr. Obi highlighted the central role of strong national institutions and public confidence in them for a thriving democracy.

He stressed that electoral disputes could be significantly reduced if the CENI carried out its statutory functions transparently and fairly.

Mr. Obi expressed gratitude to all Nigerians who supported their cause and the campaign for a new Nigeria based on the principles of equity, justice, rule of law, peace, prosperity, inclusion, growth sustainability and development.
