Police arrest 25-year-old man for stealing his mother's car

Lagos State Police arrested a 25-year-old high school dropout for allegedly stealing his mother's car in Ibadan and attempting to sell it in Lagos.

State Police Spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

Mr. Hundeyin said the suspect, who was the eldest of the woman's three children, was arrested by Ijora Badiya Police Division in Lagos on Sunday when he encountered trouble with the car.

He said the suspect, who allegedly stole around 500,000 Naira from his mother earlier to play a gambling game popularly known as 'Baba-Ijebu', wanted to sell the car to play the same game that he had never won.

The police spokesman said the suspect left Ibadan early Sunday morning with the car without his mother's consent, pointing out that while he was in Lagos at around 9:00 a.m. the car drove off. faulty and he invited a tow vehicle to the Ijora Badiya area.

"As they were driving, the driver of the tow vehicle observed that the suspect's body movements and discussion indicated that the car had been stolen.

“The driver of the tow vehicle immediately alerted the Ijora Badiya police. The police came to them on the road; took the suspect and the vehicle to the police station for questioning.

“The suspect immediately confessed that the car belonged to his mother in Ibadan and that he had brought it to Lagos to sell.

"The police called his mother and asked her where her son and his car were. The mother said she did not know where her son and his car were.

"The police asked her if she had ordered her son to sell his car, but she said she had never given such a directive," Mr. Hundeyin said in the statement.
