Police arrest journalists protesting release of colleagues, send others with tear gas in Kwara

Police arrested two journalists as they tear gassed others as they protested the release of colleagues detained by Kwara State Police Command in Ilorin.

DAILY POST reports that two journalists, Dare Akogun and Abdulrasheed Akogun, have been invited and detained since Thursday by police following a petition by Rafiu Ajakaye, the state governor's chief press officer from Kwara, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The siblings, according to information, will be debited on Friday.

In another development, on Friday morning police arrested two journalists for protesting the release of their colleagues who have been in detention since Thursday.

According to a reporter from Sobi FM, Toyin Saheed, many of them were suffocated due to the chemical compounds used by the police to dispatch them while two other reporters were singled out.

Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer Ajayi Okasanmi confirmed the arrest of two journalists who were protesting on Friday.

Okasanmi said the two journalists were arrested for stirring up trouble.

According to him, the journalists came to the police command to incite disorder.

"We don't use protest to demand the release of people in custody. Either you go to court or approach the IPO. We talk to them and they don't listen, so the police have had to send them and we arrested two of them and they will be brought to justice."

The police spokesman told DAILY POST that journalists who protested would also be prosecuted for incitement to violence.
