Police arrest pastor for allegedly raping 14-year-old chorister

Ogun police arrested a pastor for allegedly raping a 14-year-old choir member in the Agbado area.

State police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi said on Sunday that the 38-year-old pastor is the general overseer of the church.

His arrest follows a complaint filed with the Agbado police headquarters by the survivor's mother.

Mr. Oyeyemi explained that the pastor would have been arrested long ago, but the survivor's mother thwarted earlier moves saying she didn't want to offend her pastor.

He further explained that she changed her mind and called the police after noticing her daughter had been bleeding nonstop since the October 2021 rape.

The teenager, currently recovering in a hospital, told police it was the pastor who deflowered her.

The mother reported that she was away from home for treatment when her daughter went to church, but the pastor lured her to his room and had a forceful carnal relationship with her.

"On the report, police officers were deployed to the church where the pastor was arrested.

"During interrogation, the pastor admitted to defiling the victim and pleaded for forgiveness.

“According to the pastor, his family and that of the victim are friends, but he did not know how and why he got into committing the crime,” he said.

Mr. Oyeyemi said Police Commissioner Lanre Bankole has warned parents to stop protecting their daughters' abusers as they could be charged with complicity in the crime.
