Police fire staff for brutality

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has fired one of its members for assaulting a civilian.

Staff, Liyomo Okoi, with Force No, 524503 PC, attached to Ekori Divisional Headquarters, Cross Rivers Police Command, was captured in a viral video on July 31 of whipping a man with a machete.

According to a statement by the Gendarmerie spokesperson, the dismissal takes effect immediately from August 8.

Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, fdc, has expressed deep disappointment at reports of brutality and extortion against some police officers through various accessible complaint channels to the public, especially on social media platforms. The IGP has therefore directed all Police Commissioners and Tactical/Strategic Commanders to ensure strict supervision of their personnel as further incidents of this nature would be viewed strictly.

The IGP also ordered a holistic overhaul of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Special Tactics Squad (STS), and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) units to ensure that their operations are in tandem with the purpose of their creation, and maximum efficiency and output consistent with the IGP's administration and public safety mandate.

The IGP therefore directed the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau (AIG-FIB) to exercise a supervisory role over the three units to ensure that their operations are professional, active and productive and do not infringe upon the fundamental rights of citizens and other members of the public.

Similarly, the Force dismissed Force No. 524503 PC Liyomo Okoi attached to Ekori Division Headquarters, Cross Rivers Police Command for gross misconduct captured in a viral video on July 31, 2022 where he whipped a man with a machete. His revocation takes effect as of today, August 8, 2022.

The Inspector General of Police has therefore reiterated his commitment to the regeneration of ethics, the restoration of professional standards and the strengthening of the fight against corruption by dedicating himself to the entrenchment of police services focused on human rights in the country. The IGP expressed confidence that the ongoing overhaul will improve the efficiency of the units and rid them of negative elements that deviate from the standard operating procedure of the units and the Nigerian Police in general.
