A pregnant woman, identified only as Chinaza, contacted doctors at the National Hospital in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to seek a buyer for her unborn baby.

PUNCH Metro found that when the 23-year-old became pregnant, she left her parents' home in Imo State to live with her friend in Lagos State.

A source at the hospital, who spoke to our correspondent on Monday, said the house of a friend of Chinaza's was later demolished, adding that they both moved to Abuja.

The source said: "A pregnant woman came to the hospital over the weekend and said she wanted to sell her unborn baby. She said she got pregnant by mistake and had moved from her parents' home in Imo State to stay with her friend in Lagos State.

"While she was living with her friend, she said her residence was demolished and they traveled to Abuja to live with her friend's uncle. She said her uncle's landlady complained about the number of people occupying the apartment and they were then asked to leave.

"While walking around, she said that she asked for help from a woman she met in Utako, Abuja, and the woman gave her 500 naira. She says the woman told her to come to the hospital to say whatever's on her mind. She's been handed over to FCT police. She's still here as I speak."

Contacted, the hospital's public relations officer, Tayo Haastrup, promised to contact our correspondent again but had not yet done so at the time of filing this report.

State Police Public Relations Officer Josephine Adeh said, "I am aware of the incident. The lady in question is with us."
