Expert questions 'mentality' of Chelsea-linked star who is 'another version' of Hudson-Odoi

Nedum Onuoha wondered where Anthony Gordon would 'fit in' at Chelsea amid rumors of the Blues' interest in the young playmaker.

Gordon has been the subject of much transfer speculation this summer, with Spurs and Newcastle both linked.

MAILBOX: Manchester United should follow these seven steps or just accept a place in the first half…

Everton boss Frank Lampard insisted last month that the winger is "not going anywhere".

“He worked for it (the new team number). You have to win number 10,” Lampard said.

"I understand this craving for numbers with players. I was lucky, I kind of fell into number eight in my career.

"I didn't go looking for it, but I understand how important it may seem to you. But I absolutely feel right now, especially with the 10 because it has a bit of magic, a bit of flair, and Anthony has that.

"He's got it in his own style. I told him, I don't want him trying to think he's pirouetting down the midline now.

"We need him to do what he did last year, plus the goals and assists that Anthony is so keen to do. But he's earned it and that's a link with the crowd, a connection with the fans, a local boy who gives everything, a great talent.

"He's not going anywhere. He's our player and that was a hugely important thing for me, he's the kind of player we want to build going forward. I'm delighted that he got his number 10 but now I want him to keep earning it."

But Lampard's comments reportedly failed to quell interest with a report on Monday claiming Chelsea had 'submitted a £40million bid' for the 21-year-old.

Everton have reportedly rejected the offer, but it is believed that £50m would be enough to convince them to part ways with the playmaker.

Onuoha says he can understand why Chelsea are interested as Gordon offers two of their current strikers something different, but has reservations about whether he would play a significant role at Stamford Bridge.

"He's a big prospect but it's £50m for a prospect," Onuoha told ESPN FC. "At the moment I couldn't put him in this Chelsea team and see where he fits.

"I look at Hakim Ziyech, I look at Christian Pulisic; technically they're very good players, but they don't really engage people, and that's one of Anthony Gordon's great strengths.

"Playing for Chelsea, where you expect to win every game, and if you don't win two in a row, it's a mini crisis, I think it takes a strong mentality to do facing that pressure. I'm not sure Anthony Gordon is right now.

"He doesn't fit this current style of play. [Callum Hudson-Odoi] is like another version of Anthony Gordon, and he can't fit into the team."
