Sports quiz TV show Question of Sport has been axed after more than 50 years on the air, the BBC has confirmed.

The company said production on the show had been halted and "difficult decisions" had to be made.

But a BBC spokesperson insisted. was "not the final whistle" and the program may return in the future.

The first episode of the BBC One program was broadcast in 1970, presented by David Vine.

Question of Sport did not appear on screens for two years in the 1970s, but has remained in continuous production since 1978.

It was one of the most popular shows in the 1980s when David Coleman was the host - Princess Anne's appearance among the guests in 1987 attracting its largest audience ever, 19 million people.
