Raquel Welch on the secret to staying in shape in 1984

Raquel Welch, now 81, was 'in great shape for a woman who survived 44 years, 27 films, three marriages and two children' during a session photo for Observer Magazinein 1984. She was wrapping up the publication of her workout book, Raquel: The Raquel Welch Total Beauty and Fitness Program, "like those other American glam pussies mature Jane Fonda, Victoria Principal and Linda Evans'.

The book revealed Welch's "most precious beauty secrets, physical and mental" and is inspired by Hatha yoga which she discovered seven years before."The fact is," Welch said, "the mind and body are interdependent."

Thousands of women , apparently, had asked about her diet. "When they hear that I've given up salt, sugar, oil and processed foods," she said, "they're appalled." She described her p a step-by-step program like "When East meets Wales", and a third of the books are either Welch exercising (in skimpy clothes) or not exercising (in skimpy clothes).

To promote the book, "jocks" from the United States Men's Olympic Swimming Team "offered their wholehearted support", surrounding him carrying - and not wearing - budgie smugglers while Welch sported a spaghetti strap zebra print bodysuit.

Since the swimmers seem to be swimming not in water but in oil and also that they appear to be attempting some sort of proto-twerk on his face, Welch's salt and oil intake may have temporarily increased to dangerously unhealthy levels during the photo shoot.

Welch said it was while completing a stint as Lauren Bacall's stand-in in the Broadway play Woman of the Year that the idea for the book was born, rather than a suggestion from a publisher after Jane Fonda's Workout moved millions of books and videos.

"I love Jane, but that book was kind of, well, cheesy," Welch said unlovingly.
