Rashford denies claims Man Utd 'gave up' against Liverpool and shouts 'nonsense'

Marcus Rashford has responded to claims Manchester United players retired in the second half against Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag's side had an afternoon to forget as Liverpool overtook them by seven goals in a humbling outing at Anfield.

Man United players have come under intense scrutiny in recent days but Rashford has denied claims they dropped during the game.

Unfortunately, he hasn't commented on being spotted driving a car! To the shop!

"We haven't given up - that's nonsense," Rashford explained at a press conference (via Manchester Evening News).

"We weren't organized and communication was poor. It comes down to the fact that I believe everyone was trying to get back into the game at this point, we got away from the possession and possession principles.

"I felt the attackers were trying to press, just the unit of the attackers, and were disconnected from the midfield.

"We were talking, but we didn't agree on what to do. The only thing we can do is learn from this and move on."

Ten Hag's side had made it a game in the first half, but they quickly caved under the pressure in the 45 second minutes.

"Losing against Liverpool is enough," added Rashford. "The score doesn't matter when you lose a game against Liverpool or any other rival, it cuts deep, it's not nice, it's never a nice feeling but for me I always remember the number of matches we have won against them.

"It's football and that's why everyone loves this game. It's disappointing, but we can't dwell on it and look back.

“We are in a position where we are still fighting on all fronts and we still have a lot of games to play. We want to fix that.”

Bruno Fernandes took a lot of stick after his second-half antics against Liverpool, but Rashford offered a defense from midfield.

"I love playing with Bruno, as you can imagine. He's the perfect player to play with. He's been a good leader for us, even when he's not captain, which is always a good sign.

"He's helped other players become better leaders and the reality is that we can't be an organized team with just one leader as captain.

“He did a lot for us. I have nothing negative to say about Bruno. As the manager said, no one is perfect. I support him and I'm 100% behind him.”

Ten Hag took a similar approach to Rashford and backed Fernandes as captain, despite the criticism he has recently received.

Man United will now turn their attention to the Europa League as they prepare for a midweek clash with Real Betis.
