Fans of Red Dead Online are going to be disappointed. In a Rockstar Games blog post earlier today, the company confirmed that it is reducing RDO support. This comes as the studio ramps up development of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI.

In the post, Rockstar noted the migration of development resources to the latest entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. The Red Dead Online portion of the blog begins with an attempt to set expectations: to exceed player expectations and to ensure that this next entry is the best it can be - and as a result, we are making some changes to how we support Red Dead Online.

This announcement is far from shocking: the Grand Theft Auto series is Rockstar's daily bread. Originally released in 2013, Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 155 million copies by the end of 2021. That's a lot of copies, but the startling statistic is that GTA:O makes around $1 billion every year. With these numbers, it's no surprise that Rockstar is focusing more on GTA than any other property.

So what does this mean for RDO? Less content in the future: “Along with seasonal special events and experience improvements – as well as other changes to improve and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment – we plan to build on existing modes and adding new Telegram missions this year, rather than providing major themed content updates like in previous years, and we'll continue to highlight and share the creative efforts of our Red Dead community at every opportunity. via Newswire and beyond.
