Regular travelers are the most affected by the failure of airports and airline structural systems

The country's frequent travelers have been described as the most affected when the airport system fails to meet the standards of being the fastest mode of transportation.

Speaking at a conference in Lagos titled "Aviation Industry: Changing Times, Changing Strategies", Akwaaba Travel Market Organizer Ambassador Ikechi Uko said the average Nigerian passenger was expected to arrive at their destination on time without fear of disappointment, he or she must purchase more than one ticket.

Beyond that, Uko said airports are failing to make facilitation, the subject of aviation, transparent with deteriorating infrastructure like limited boarding gates, irregular baggage claim and others, which also put a strain on the airlines.

“The Nigerian passenger was not served as well as today. If you can't buy all those tickets and have options, you have to fly from here to Abuja and now fly back to Lagos because you couldn't get that air connection. I don't see any system where this would work very well. So if you're talking about changing time and strategy, I don't think we've started the discussion.

"In 2004, when I started flying to Ghana with Nigerian airlines, the experience I had then is probably better than what I have now as a traveler . Everything we talk about and we don't talk about how to improve the traveler experience is a complete waste because today's traveler is not well served. »

Recalling an unfortunate flight experience from Abuja, Uko said: “For those of us who travel every other day, this is a bad experience. I would love to be patriotic and support the Nigerian airline and the players, but if you know what some of us have to go through, I don't think we're having the right discussion. »

Lamenting the failure of airports and their inefficiency in managing traffic, Uko remarked, “Most of our airports do not have a capacity of less than 100,000 passengers. I just did an analysis for Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, they had 145,000 in 2021 and now they are maybe close to 200,000. And you do 345 passengers a day and you plan with the plane that Ibom plans to bring. They carry approximately 1,000 passengers per day.

"What is the capacity of the airport facilities?" How many drivers can transport all these people? These are things you need to do and be prepared to deal with. It is not enough to bring a plane, the plane will remain on the tarmac and the passengers will suffer.

The same for MM2, we are leasing them now, but if our airline capacity increases like what happened in December when everyone went to get an A320, I'm sure we're in for chaos which happened, even at MM2.

“I think when we plan, we have to scale everything from the bottom up. I see a seasonal phenomenon, like every December, everyone is going to take a big plane and the airports are not ready. »
