Report lifts lid on Man Utd's failure to sign La Liga star with deals for 'work in progress' trio of forwards

Man Utd reportedly tried to sign Antoine Griezmann this summer but his 'priority' was to stay at La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

Griezmann has always been linked with the Premier League over the past few years, but it seems likely he will spend the rest of his career outside of England.

The Frenchman joined Atletico Madrid permanently from FC Barcelona last October. He first returned to his former club in 2021 on loan.

That loan deal included an obligation to buy for around £35m if he played a certain number of minutes in 2021/22, but they were keen to avoid paying that fee given their ongoing financial struggles .

That meant Griezmann was limited to 30-minute cameos at the end of last season, so he stayed below the appearance figure that would have forced them to buy.

Man Utd are on the hunt for strikers, although their problem in this area was less pressing last summer as they still had Cristiano Ronaldo.

They were apparently planning for Ronaldo's exit, though. Sky Sports report that Man Utd "sought dialogue" with Griezmann this summer to "assess the possibility of signing the France international".

United's hierarchy 'called to arrange a meeting' but Griezmann's 'priority' was to join Atletico Madrid permanently. This despite being 'flattered' by the Red Devils' interest and feeling a move to the Premier League would be a 'challenge'.

The requests from England are said to 'have not stopped', but the player remains 'happy' at Atletico Madrid and 'the only time he would consider his future' is if Diego Simeone was leaving.

A separate report from Dean Jones has poured cold water on suggestions that Griezmann could end up at Man Utd.

"I would be absolutely amazed if Griezmann lands at Man Utd. I don't know what world that would be happening in right now," Jones told GiveMeSport.

"He had a brilliant World Cup. I'm not sure Diego Simeone will play him in the same role he played for France, but I certainly think he will. I don't think that United will get Griezmann soon."

Sky Sports adds that "United have also worked on Napoli's Victor Osimhen, Red Bull Salzburg's Benjamin Sesko - who joins RB Leipzig this summer - and Ajax's Mohammed Kudus".

Osimhen has been in stunning form for Serie A leaders Napoli this season but it is suggested he could cost up to £133million.

A deal for Sesko seems unlikely in the coming months as he is expected to join RB Leipzig before next season. He's always been linked with Man Utd so it might be one to revisit in a year or two.

Kudus, meanwhile, has a strong relationship with Erik ten Hag, as they worked together at Ajax.
