Using AI to process personal data is a risky business. Organizations that use AI and ML models to gather insights from user data must ensure that they do not violate the rights of data subjects as granted by regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation. data protection (GDPR), or they run the risk of serious compliance liabilities.

However, a number of vendors aim to prevent compliance issues related to the processing of personal data through the use of responsible AI.

Protopia AI, which today announced it has raised $6 million in a seed funding round led by ATX Venture Partners, has developed a solution designed to anonymize user data so organizations can process data while protecting the privacy rights of their customers.

The vendor's Stained Glass Transform software uses AI and ML to identify the critical data an organization's AI models need to generate insights, and hides personal information, so it are not identifiable or are not at risk of being disclosed to unauthorized third parties.

In many respects, the lawfulness of data processing remains uncertain. Just recently, the French SA fined Clearview AI 20 million euros ($21 million) for allegedly collecting and processing the personal data of people residing in France.

Similarly, human rights activist Tanya O-Caroll recently filed a lawsuit in the UK, claiming that Facebook breached the GDPR by processing and profiling her personal data and adapting it to adverts.

While these are unique cases with individual nuances, from a broader perspective, organizations handling personally identifiable information (PII) must be extremely careful not to violate local regulations and international data protection standards.

Unfortunately, this climate of legal uncertainty has prevented many organizations from exploiting the data they have access to, for fear of legal action.

“Access to key data for AI is a major hurdle. This is ironic, as companies now have access to unprecedented volumes of data and can now use new machine learning tools to make business forecasts and leverage efficiencies,” said Protopia co-founder and CEO Eiman Ebrahimi.

“However, they are often blocked because value and insights from data are entangled in privileged customer data. AI is data accessibility,” Ebrahimi said.

Protopia AI aims to remedy this by enabling enterprises to leverage the data they hold, while minimizing identifiable information in structured and unstructured visual, tabular, text, and audio data assets, to ensure that consumer privacy rights remain intact.

It should be noted that Protopia AI is not the only vendor to have turned to AI and ML to begin identifying and minimizing sensitive data.
