Review: Bernzomatic Firepoint Creation Tool

Manufacturer: Bernzomatic

Price: $75

Like many of you, I've had an old torch head for propane and map tanks lying around in workshops all my life. It's the kind of tool you only need occasionally, but there's no other tool in the store that does what it does, so it never goes away either.< /p>

The problem, at least for most of my life, is that these torch heads are imprecise and really only good for heating a difficult area or starting a fire. Removing stuck bolts was probably my most common use.

The Bernzomatic Firepoint Creator tool seems like a push to change the torch from a blunt object to a more precise tool. They did it in several ways. It has more control over the shape and size of the flame than you might expect for a household torch, and the torch itself sits at the end of a hose, allowing for easier use. than those attached directly to the top of a bottle.< /p>

In Use

I received the device for testing and was pleasantly surprised by the configuration. There is not only the head at the end of the hose, but also a nice base that can hold your propane tank and the head. Seems like a small thing, but when you have it on your workbench having your head crashing down would be annoying, the base really helps.

this picture could be a little bit misleading. There is a larger, less visible hot spot.

Flame adjustment is good enough for a single head on a propane canister. I was able to reduce the flame enough to use it for more artistic pursuits that require precision. The flame lock lets you light a flame and leave it on without having to hold the button down, which is nice, especially when you're trying to manipulate the tip more like a brush than a little flamethrower.

An example of precision would be working with glass. In the video below I was still using the old style and very frustrated with the lack of precision. Maybe I should revisit this hobby now! This torch is much cheaper than even an entry-level glassblowing head, and there's plenty to tinker with.
