Riley Keough: Director and actress 'struggled' to secure funding for War Pony

She is the granddaughter of Elvis and the star of one of the most talked about series of the year, Daisy Jones & The Six.

But when it comes to directing, actress Riley Keough says she and her co-director, British-Australian Gina Gammell , have "fought" to finance War Pony, their first film.

"There is a lot of talk and I think there is a lot of effort, but I don't know if the people making those decisions are still totally there," she says.

"I don't know if some have understood the concept that women can hold positions of power and be trusted."

< p class="ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00">War Pony is the story of two young Native American men trying to find their place in a world that doesn't offer them many opportunities, and was filmed on the Pine reservation Ridge, the land of the Oglala Lakota, South Dakota, using a largely local cast and first-time actors.

It won the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year - the award given by the festival to the best first feature film. But at times Keough wondered if the film would be finished.
