Riot shields deployed as PSG stars Messi and Mbappe tear up Man Utd and Arsenal flops

Riot shields were deployed as Paris Saint-Germain stars Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe shone in Le Classique against Marseille. The reigning French champions quickly took the lead against their biggest rivals, whose squad included former Manchester United and Arsenal players Alexis Sanchez, Eric Bailly, Matteo Guendouzi, Sead Kolasinac and Nuno Tavares.

Mbappe put PSG ahead before playing a lavish pass to hit partner Messi to score a second goal. Messi ran into the corner with Mbappe and the rest of his teammates to celebrate the goal.

In slightly bizarre scenes, their celebrations were surrounded by deployed security guards holding riot shields. As the PSG players congratulated the Argentine icon on his goal, at least three individuals could be seen running around the pitch wearing protective gear.

It appeared that they were preventing PSG players from being hit by missiles launched by an increasingly hostile Marseille crowd. At least a few items could be seen thrown onto the pitch, although this was limited to cups and tissues.

None of the players were hit by any of the missiles and continued their celebrations peacefully. They didn't seem to annoy the Marseille supporters and quickly returned to their own half.

Riot police were also seen earlier in the match trying to protect the PSG players when they took throw-ins. The Classic is a long-standing rivalry between the clubs most decorated from France, with tensions sometimes overflowing when they meet in Ligue 1.

PSG took the lead at the Stade Vélodrome, keen to extend their lead at the top of the standings. Mbappe gave the Parisians the lead in the 25th minute before kicking off World Cup final nemesis Messi four minutes later.

The Marseille team has several very recognizable faces for Premier League fans. Former Man Utd and Arsenal star Sanchez leads their line after enjoying a resurrection after disappointing spells at Old Trafford and Inter Milan.

The Olympians also have former Arsenal players Guendouzi and Kolasinac, while left-back Tavares is on loan from the Gunners. The latter played an unknown role at right-back to help United deal Loanee Bailly against Mbappe.

But the tactic didn't work with the France ace who scored and assisted in the first 30 minutes. Messi and Mbappe now have a remarkable 45 goals between them in all competitions this season.
