Sanchez leaves the Middle East for Ecuador and focuses on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup

March 13 - Qatar World Cup coach Felix Sanchez has a new role. He will succeed Gustavo Alfaro as Ecuador's head coach on a four-year contract, with qualification for the 2026 World Cup being his main challenge.

Sanchez and Alfaro both left the recent World Cup in the group stage in disappointing fashion.

Hosts Qatar failed to pick up a single point from their matches and with just one goal on the board, they recorded the worst performance ever by a host country in a World Finals. Ecuador had entered the tournament with high hopes, but in the end the Netherlands and Senegal qualified for the second round of their group.

The results saw both coaches leave, but Sanchez will take over at Ecuador after being previously linked with Iran who are without a coach following the departure of Carlos Queiroz. "Good luck and success teacher!" FEF tweeted.

Sanchez, 47, began his coaching career at Barcelona's youth academy before joining Aspire Academy in 2006. Thirteen years later, he led Qatar to their first-ever continental title in of the Asian Cup.

Sanchez will captain Ecuador for the first time against Australia when the two countries play two friendlies in March. Next year, Ecuador will participate in the Copa America 2024 in the United States, one of the hosts of the 2026 World Cup.

With the tournament expanded to a 48-team format; Ecuador will expect to be among the finalists. The South Americans have qualified for the World Cup four times, reaching the round of 16 in 2006, their best result.
