Saudis, Egyptians and Greeks line up to host 2030 World Cup

September 9 - Saudi Arabia is reportedly launching a joint bid with Egypt and Greece to host the 2030 World Cup within weeks.

The Times reports that the Saudis are set to move forward with a bid as lead partners along with Egypt and Greece for the 2030 World Finals. If successful, that would mean a tournament held on three continents and another final in winter. This year's World Cup in Qatar is the first to take place in November and December following concerns over the summer heat in Doha.

Since 2017, Saudi Arabia has become more interested in sports and hosts international sporting events including boxing and formula 1. The Arab kingdom has set its sights on the 2026 Women's Asian Cup and Asian Games . Saudi Arabia is also a candidate for the 2027 Asian Cup.

The Saudi Arabian Football Association (SAFF) has recently established close ties with FIFA. They proposed a biennial World Cup, an idea that eventually died out following widespread opposition from UEFA and Conmebol.

Infantino, who lives in Doha, is also a regular in Riyadh. He frequently meets Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman. The FIFA President also met with Greek FA President Panagiotis Baltakos this week.

The FIFA website said the meeting at its Paris office was "to discuss Greek football in general and further cooperation between the two organisations". Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reportedly discussed the plans with UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin.

Egyptian media earlier also reported that the country would be involved in the bid.

"Our country has the potential for the World Cup, but it is something that must be considered first," said Egyptian Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhi.

Sobhi is said to have already discussed the offer with his Saudi counterpart.

If Saudi Arabia goes ahead with its bid, it will face competition from a bid from four South American countries as well as a joint bid from Portugal and Spain. Earlier this week, Ceferin said he supported the Iberian offer.
