Seven unique numbers from the 2021/22 NPFL season

The Nigerian Professional Football League 2022 ended on Sunday July 17.

Rivers United are champions for the first time in their history while four-time champions Kano Pillars have been relegated.

The season kicked off on December 17, 2021, with newly promoted Remo Stars beating MFM in Lagos - a sign of things to come for Olukoya Boys, who were eventually relegated after six seasons in the top flight.

There were two away wins on Matchday 1, but Premium Times picks seven unique numbers over the season.

Four managers

The relegated MFM went through four managers in their doomed campaign. Shola Balogun, Olalekan Gabriel, Christian Ikechukwu and Festus Allen.

It was the classic case of too many cooks spoiling the broth. So, after six years and many victories plus an incursion on the continent, the Olukoya Boys must pick up the pieces in NNL.

five guardians

3SC employed five goalkeepers for the season and finished with a negative goal difference. Oluyole Warriors ended up conceding 45 goals and were humorously saved from relegation by a better goal difference of four than Katsina United, who finished with the same tally of 48.

Rivers United reached the highest points total ever in the NPFL, with 77; conceded the fewest goals - 24; and achieved the largest margin of victory in 17 years. The team led by Stanley Eguma also won 23 (60.5%); scored the most goals scored in a season (58) since 2015.

29 away wins

We only recorded six away wins in the last 10 weeks of the season as home teams did more to win and fatigue from a cramped season caught up with teams that had to endure long journeys to run their away matches. TEXEM Advert 123 wins 1-0

The most common score line in the season just ended was the 1-0 result. This happened 123 times in the 380 games - 32.3%. So the odds of an NPFL game ending 1-0 was 1 in 3, a good odds indeed for bettors.

213 days

It took 213 days to conclude the 2021/22 NPFL season - the fastest since the CML took over Nigeria's top flight league in 2013. The season kicked off on December 17, 2021 and ended went off without a hitch until the 38th day on June 17. .

3420+ minutes

Kelechi Chimezie, a defensive midfielder for Gombe United, has played all 38 games and minutes for his side in the just-ended season. That's 3,420 minutes plus anything added for delays, injuries and substitutions.
