SMEDAN empowers 80 Bauchi women in agribusiness

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has launched a five-day training on entrepreneurship development and empowerment for 80 women in agribusiness in the state of Bauchi.

The General Manager of SMEDAN, Mr. Olawale Fasanya, said so in Bauchi on Friday during the closing ceremony of the training.

According to him, the program was launched under the agency's Women in Self Employment Program (WISE-P) with a particular focus on women working in agriculture and agribusiness (chain of agricultural value).

Represented by Mr. Mahmood Isa, Area Coordinator, SMEDAN, North East, Fasanya said that many women are dedicated to agriculture and many are ready to go into agriculture or agro- industry as a means of subsistence and self-employment.

However, their progress is limited because they lack the skills and funding to continue successfully and even access markets, hence the introduction of the program by SMEDAN.

"The program is designed to provide entrepreneurship education, skills training, empowerment with common facilities and delivery of business development services to 80 participants per state in six states selected for the first phase .

“Today, the first phase of the program kicks off simultaneously in six states of Osun, Ebonyi, Katsina, Bauchi, Ekiti and Kwara.

"The WISE-P is designed primarily to promote women's empowerment and empower them to improve the productivity and sustainability of enterprises in terms of agricultural production and agri-food processing along value chains.

"It is also to stimulate the production of raw materials for industrial use and development because it is said that when you form a woman, you form a nation and when you empower a woman, you have liberated the nation", has said the DG.

He further explained that all beneficiaries would receive the necessary support and equipment to facilitate their means of doing business.
