19 dead in road accident in Abuja – FRSC

The Acting Corps Marshal of the Federal Highway Safety Corps, Dauda Biu, again warned road users to avoid excessive speeding and unwarranted overtaking.

He also advised commuters to avoid nighttime journeys due to the dangers associated with dark hours.

The warning came following the unfortunate fatal accident which claimed the lives of 19 people and injured eight people in the early hours of Sunday along the Gwagwalada-Lokoja highway, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

In a statement signed by Corps spokesman Bisi Kazeem on Sunday, the accident which involved two Toyota Hiace buses with registration numbers MUB-30 LG, DWR-985XJ and a Citroën trailer, said had a total of 31 people including 11 men, one woman and 19 others, whose gender could not be determined due to the intensity of the fire.

Of the 31 victims, eight people, including seven men and one woman, suffered varying degrees of injuries, while 19 others were burned beyond recognition.

The statement states that "the Toyota Hiace bus with REG NO: MUB-30 LG, which was at high speed, crashed into a moving Citroën trailer and immediately burst into flames, burning all occupants of the vehicle to death .

"In the same vein, the second bus also rammed the already crashed bus from behind and burst into flames.

"One of the buses is said to have transited from Takai, Kano State, to Benin, Edo State. While the Citroën trailer loaded with chicken feed from Zaria, Kaduna State, was on his way to deliver the goods in Akwa Ibom State.

“The rescue operation was carried out jointly by the combined teams of Zebra 6 Yangoji and the Nigerian Police Patrol Team.

The injured victims were rescued and taken to Rhema Hospital in Kwali, while one of the identified male corpses was deposited in the morgue of Kwali General Hospital.

"However, the 19 corpses burned beyond recognition, which were trapped in the vehicle, were recovered by Zebra 6 Yangoji rescuers."

The Acting Corps Marshal stressed that the corps will step up awareness of motorists and strengthen its patrol activities to deter violators.
