The good news is that nearly the entire high street paid tribute to this particular sweater: the Gap version sold out immediately; Topshop's (£42) flips the color balance; Zara (left) is a bargain and the Cos version comes with a zip neck (£79).

Knitted, £32.99, zara.comEven better news is that a Breton jumper never dates Originally a knit fishing shirt, the lightness of the top and distinct stripes meant that if you fell through- above board, you would be easily spotted in the water Fortunately, it is now more of an onshore hit, given Coco Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier iconic style status, which included the Breton stripe in its pre first haute couture show. Universally recognized as a marker of chic weekend outfits, it pairs well with jeans, loafers and a trench coat, or over a strappy dress (or skirt) with chunky boots for an instantly cool look. Keep accessories to a minimum: simple gold jewelery and a classic shoulder bag are enough.
