SON welcomes FAO and NCC revision of manual of procedures for food standards in Nigeria

The Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has commended the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the National Codex Committee (NCC) for the pivotal role played in developing of food standards at the international level, in particular at the various committees of the Codex Alimentarius Commission where standards are adopted at the national level.

Speaking in Abuja, SON Chief Executive Mallam Farouk Salim said the review was necessary to keep up with the growth of Codex activities.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Professor Olobayo Kunle, SON's Chief Executive explained that NCC has also contributed to the review of Food Safety Policy and Food Safety Bill in Nigeria.< /p>

"The National Codex Committee Procedural Manual was first prepared in accordance with the CAC Procedural Manual published in 2002, with further revisions in 2007 and 2012 to guide the activities and enhance the functions of all stakeholders involved for effective operations.

“The revision of the CNC Procedural Manual was necessary to keep pace with the growth of Codex activities over time, incorporate major changes, improve and strengthen the structure of Codex in Nigeria.

According to him, “The National Codex Committee (NCC) of Nigeria has successfully applied for support from the Codex Trust Fund (CTF) 2 to build strong, robust and sustainable national capacities to engage in the activities of the Codex through the organization of annual sensitization and advocacy activities, workshops with policy makers, targeted competent authorities and other stakeholders to disseminate more information about Codex.

"The overall objective of the activity is to raise the awareness of public decision-makers and competent authorities on the need to become more involved in the national codex and to regularly provide all the support to increase its actions in favor of the national food safety,” he said.

Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Nigeria, Fred Kafeero, said that since the establishment of the CAC, FAO has worked with the World Food Organization health in the development of international food standards, guidelines and codes of practice to protect consumer health and ensure fair trading practices in the food trade using risk analysis principles and scientific advice provided by the bodies meetings and joint FAO/WHO consultations.

Represented by the administration of Deputy FAO Representative David Fehintola said his country office in Nigeria, with the support of the regional office for Africa, continued to partner with the government and the Committee National Codex to create effective and efficient policies and strategies to eradicate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in the country.

He said that FAO is convinced that ensuring the supply of safe, quality and nutritious food is as important as ensuring food availability and food standardization, because "food of poor quality does not guarantee food safety," he said.

The FAO Representative in Nigeria said the agency was supporting the National Codex Committee (NCC) in Nigeria, which has members from all MDAs and the private sector through the implementation of Trust Fund activities 2 with a focus on the implementation of the Codex Strategic Plan 2020-2025.

"We at FAO believe it is vital that the CNC commit to upholding the core values ​​of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) of inclusiveness, collaboration, consensus-building and transparency in all its work.

“FAO, in its support through the CTF2 project, strives to ensure the participation of all Codex members in the country in the standard setting process to ensure that these core values ​​are respected .
