Sony's PlayStation loyalty program debuts in the US on October 5

You won't have to wait long to earn bonuses by playing and buying PlayStation games. Sony is now announcing that its PlayStation Stars loyalty program will debut in the Americas on October 5, while Australians and Europeans will have access on October 13. Stars is already active in Asia, particularly in Japan. The program is free, but you will get some benefits if you are a PlayStation Plus member.

You currently need to access Stars through the PlayStation app on mobile devices if you want the "full" experience. You can sign up on the web, though, and Sony expects to reach PlayStation consoles in the future.

As previously explained, you earn rewards in PlayStation Stars by completing activities and campaigns ranging from the basic (playing any game once a month) to the most challenging (being one of the first to win the platinum trophy of a game in your region). You'll earn loyalty points that you can use for your PlayStation Network wallet, digital collectibles (no, not NFTs), and certain merchandise. You can also receive collectibles directly.

You can improve the number of rewards you get by progressing through status tiers based on trophies and purchases. However, you will need to recharge this 13 months after the end of the calendar year in which you reached them. If you reach level 2 in October, you will have until January 31, 2024 to extend this status.

The strategy and its motivations are not new. As with Microsoft Points and Nintendo Gold Points, this keeps you coming back to your console and spending money. Given that it's free, however, it might be worth a try even if you only turn on your PS5 occasionally.
