Spain leads the world ranking of the best tourist villages with three awards

Three isolated Spanish communities have been named among the best villages in the world for tourists - the most entries for a single country.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recently unveiled its annual list of the best tourist villages around the world, those on it score high on social and environmental sustainability as well as their work touristic.

The 32 destinations are in countries such as Austria, Vietnam, China, Israel and Italy. Spain is represented with the medieval Catalan village of Rupit; Alquézar, in the Sierra de Guara mountains in Aragon; and Guadalupe, known for its monastery, in the Extremadura region.

Manuel Butler, director of the Spanish Tourist Board in London, said: "We are delighted that the UNWTO has placed Spain as the country with the most appearances in its list. Our aim is to promote community tourism throughout Spain and we are delighted with this international recognition. -type="model. dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement" class="dcr-173mewl">Hill village

The distinction rewards rural destinations that embrace tourism as a driver of development and new employment and income opportunities, while preserving and promoting community values nautaires.

The 32 award-winning villages are found in 18 countries in South America, Asia and Africa as well as Europe. They have been evaluated by an independent advisory committee on criteria such as culture, natural resources and sustainability - whether economic, social or environmental.

For 2022 awards, a total of 136 villages were proposed for consideration by 57 UNWTO Member States (each could nominate up to three villages).

“For communities around the world, tourism can be a real game-changer by creating jobs, supporting local businesses and preserving traditions,” said UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili. "UNWTO's Best Tourist Villages list showcases the power of the sector to drive economic diversification and create opportunities for everyone outside the big cities."

The award ceremony will take place in Al'Ula, Saudi Arabia in February.
