The Federal Ministry of Education noted on Monday that the ongoing strike by the Union of Academic Staff at Universities has hampered the payment of scholarships to students of teaching at universities.

Ministry Permanent Secretary Andrew Adejo made this known during the World Teachers Day 2022 press briefing held in Abuja.

The PUNCH had, in 2021, reported how Buhari promised to unlock scholarships for students studying education in universities and colleges of education.

“Undergraduate students of the B.Ed/B.A. Ed./BSc. Ed in Public institutions will receive stipends of N75,000.00 per semester while NCE students will receive N50,000.00 as stipends per semester.

"The federal government should find the modality through which the respective state governments could provide automatic employment to NCE graduates at the basic education level," Buhari had said through its Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.

Speaking to the press, Adejo said: "The implementation of the payment of allowances has started.

However, due to the strike, we were unable to obtain the data of all university students. We only have 7% of the required data to process for payment."

Speaking further, Adejo said, "I have to state here that the nationwide implementation of the new national education policy has begun. This is a holistic package that will address in ultimately career path, compensation, professional teaching standards, teacher qualification, deployment and management.

"WED 2022's theme of 'Educational Transformation Begins with Teachers' strongly emphasizes the importance of empowering teachers for effective educational transformation to ensure quality teaching and learning as well as galvanizing technological advancements to meet the ever-changing needs of national growth and development.”
