Sudan crisis: 637 evacuees being documented ahead of airlift from Egypt to Nigeria - FG

As many as 637 stranded Nigerians who were evacuated from Sudan's war zone are undergoing necessary documentation and clearance before being admitted to Egyptian territory for possible air transport to Nigeria.

The Federal Government disclosed this via a joint statement issued by the Ministers of the Federal Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development who co-chaired the Crisis Room held Friday, April 28, 2023.

The minister said the first batch of 13 buses carrying 637 evacuees arrived at identified safe borders in Aswan, Egypt on Friday.

According to the joint statement jointly signed by the Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office, Ambassador Janet Olisa and the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development , Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo.

They assured that "the movement of the second batch of 29 buses will begin on Saturday, April 29, 2023.

"Evacuees are advised to travel to designated locations with only one piece of luggage.

"Contrary to insinuations on social media, embassy staff are very present on the ground in Khartoum to coordinate the evacuation exercise until the end.

"Students and other Nigerians awaiting evacuation from Khartoum, Sudan are therefore urged to cooperate with them to ensure order and proper documentation when boarding the buses.

"This will go a long way in speeding up the process and avoiding unnecessary delays with documentation and customs clearance upon arrival in Aswan, Egypt.

While the Federal Government sympathizes with the affected Nigerians, policing a desperate situation remains crucial to getting all interested Nigerians out of the war zone in record time before the ceasefire expires. fire, which has been extended for 72 hours.

“The general public is also advised to disregard unverified information posted on social media, as some of it is due either to ignorance or outright mischief.

“The outcry over the negotiated sum of $1.2 million for leased buses for the exercise is unwarranted.

"Therefore, the cooperation and understanding of all is needed to complement the ongoing efforts to ensure the safe return of every Nigerian trapped in Sudan.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria takes this opportunity to express its gratitude to friendly countries who have in one way or another assisted in bringing relief to Nigerians fleeing the war in Sudan.

"In particular, Nigeria thanks the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for graciously assisting in the evacuation of eight Nigerians from Sudan to safety in its territory, from where they would be airlifted to Nigeria.< /p>

"As of now, the first group of Nigerian evacuees to arrive in Aswan are expected to be airlifted to Nigeria in the next few hours by the Nigerian Air Force and Air Peace Airlines, which are awaiting operations.”
